Alternative futures in the East End of London at Tower Hamlets
            College
During our annual Alternative Futures Event for A Level Learners our students choose a project and spend the week being creative, showcasing their work at the end of the event.

A typical year's project line-up...

It’s not Rocket Science
Students will learn about projectile motion and aerodynamics by making rockets (see film and images of last year's project to the right of this page)!

Soul Fire Theatre
For budding actors, artists, producers, directors and writers. Students will have the opportunity to produce and perform in a short play celebrating East End life.

Wizzy Wires
Students will have the chance to make electronic gadgets.

Anti knife music
Students will use the format of song, poetry and music to explore the issues and affects of knife crime. They will have the chance to research write and record a song or poem about anti knife crime and record a CD with a Special guest.

Women's project
Students will be provided with insight into overcoming barriers in the corporate world along with celebrating and reflecting on personal achievement by designing and making jewellery. Delivery of a women’s conference with guest speakers, interactive discussion and the use of creative media to tackle issues currently of concern to young women.

Gorilla Gardening
The aim is to learn about conservation methods and plan a wild city garden.

Psychology Film Project
Students will make a film about an aspect of psychology they find intriguing celebrating the end of their first year (Preference will be given to Psychology students).

Yes you can (help save the earth)!
Students will explore how we avoid disasters in the UK and consider how we can move towards using alternative energies. By the end of the project every student will have done something to help the environment.

Ready, Steady, Cook
Students will learn how to cook and find out about basic hygiene.

Nomura Dragon's Den
Students will take part in a Business Dragon's Den. A project manager from East London Business Alliance and staff from Poplar HARCA will meet the prospective students and go through what they need to know for the Dragon’s Den. Students will prepare business proposals for submission to Nomura volunteers a week prior to the event.

Chemistry in Action
Students will investigate the role played by chemists in the provision of evidence that global warming is taking place and exploration of the tools used by chemists in finding solutions to the environmental problems. Students will have the opportunity to examine alternative sources of fuels for the future.

Global Health
Students will be looking at global health issues and how they impact on local population.

Celebrities, Stars & Wannabees
The aim is to meet, talk to and photograph a range of media personalities and explore the role of the journalist and press photographer.

Law Project
Celebrating life! Students will explore ways of preserving life by resolving disputes/disagreements/issues without resorting to violence or crime.  This includes trips and filming at places like The Old Bailey, Royal Courts of Justice and Inner Temple.

There will also be a mixture of additional activities taking place during the last two weeks of term.
