AS Level
Level 3 - Full A Level equivalent
Length of course:
1 year AS Level, 2 years for full A Level
Venue:
Poplar Centre
Age Group:

At AS Level you will study a play, a novel and a collection of poetry. You will also study some shorter texts and extracts. All the literature you study will be modern and will explore the issue of identity in areas such as gender, race, class and culture.

You will be expected to read your texts at home and to read widely. There will be two pieces of coursework based on your novel and play and one of the pieces could be a creative response. There will be one examination on your poetry text and on your wider reading of the Struggle for Identity in Modern Literature.

All students who pass in the AS year will be encouraged to continue with English Literature in the second year where one of your texts will be a Shakespeare play.

Each year we have several students who go on to study English at top universities such as Queen Mary.

Where this course might take me:
A good A Level in English Literature is much valued by universities and employers as it shows high ability in analytical and communication skills. You can progress to university and study for a degree in English or study it as part of a joint degree. An A Level in English Literature is an excellent preparation for careers in journalism, law, business and the civil service.
