At AS Level you will study a play, a novel and a collection of poetry. You will also study some shorter texts and extracts. All the literature you study will be from the nineteenth century and will involve themes such as political and social change, the role of women and attitudes to religion.

You will be expected to read your texts at home and to read widely. There will be two pieces of coursework based on your novel and play and one of the pieces could be a creative response. There will be one examination on your poetry text and on your wider reading of Victorian Literature.

All students who pass in the AS year will be encouraged to continue with English Literature in the second year where one of your texts will be a Shakespeare play.

Each year we have several students who go on to study English at top universities such as Queen Mary.
