AS/A Level Media Studies
The aim of this course is to provide you with a method to understand what the media is saying about the world; to be able to make your own mind up about the way events are represented across all the media platforms, for example newspapers, TV, radio, film etc.
You will investigate and explore the media in the broadest sense, from traditional forms such as film, print journalism, television and radio to the internet and e-media. As well as discussion, debate and written reports, 50% of the course work is hands-on. The practical side of your coursework involves developing a response to a set brief. Examples of previous coursework involve making a trailer to promote a film and creating a website to advertise a teen magazine.
These projects are complimented by activities such as film screenings, lectures, group work, presentations, demonstrations, workshops and research tasks to give you a comprehensive awareness of media platforms and broadcast language used for mass communication.
Media Studies complements other A Levels such as English Language & Literature, Film Studies, History, Politics, Business Studies, Sociology and Psychology as well as Art & Design. The skills you acquire through studying this subject will prove invaluable in jobs that involve communication.
