The BTEC First Diploma in Public Services is designed to give students the opportunity to gain a realistic idea of what a career in the public services can offer. Students will have the opportunity to visit a variety of Public Services and will also gain knowledge of the industry from a wide range of speakers.

To be successful in this industry it is important to have excellent interpersonal skills, be able to communicate with a range of other people and to demonstrate effective team working skills. The units studied will assist the student in gaining these skills.
Six units to be studied throughout the 1 year programme chosen from

  • Uniformed Public Services Employment
  • Public Service Skills
  • Uniformed Public Service Fitness
  • Expedition Skills
  • Adventurous Activiites and Teamwork for the Public Servcies(this will include a 1 week residential visit to an appropriate outdoor activity centre)
  • Community and Cultural Awareness
  • Sport and Recreation
  • Crime and its Effect
  • Land Navigation with Map and Compass
  • Law and the Individual
  • Public Service Workplace Welfare

Students may be required to participate in a work experience programme as an integral part of the course, where this is appropriate. This course includes a number of visits, including Army Days, the Royal Courts of Justice, the Houses of Parliament and camping in the New Forest. The cost of these trips is £50. Optional residential trips are often organised for students and these can cost between £300 and £600.

Where this course might take me: 
This course is a recognised route into a National Diploma course. Students should aim for a merit or distinction grade at the end of the course to ensure progression to the National Diploma.
