PGCE - Professional Graduate Certificate in Education / Certificate in Education (PCET)
The PGCE-Cert Ed is a two-year part-time course leading to full LLUK endorsed qualification as a teacher in the PCET (post-compulsory education and training) sector. The course is open to graduates (for the PGCE) and non-graduates (for the Cert. Ed.).
The qualification is run in partnership with, and accredited by, the University of East London. It comprises 120 credits.
The PGCE develops or expands your understanding and practice of teaching adults. It includes an introduction to teaching and learning, extends the range of enquiry into teaching and learning theory, and covers curriculum, assessment and professional reflective practice. Attention will also be paid to the new Minimum Core of skills and knowledge in literacy, numeracy and IT. In Year 2 there are modules on PCET policy and supporting learners.
Entry Requirements:
- A 2:2 degree for entrants to the PGCE programme. Non-graduates can apply to join the Cert Ed programme.
- Teachers who already have a stage 1 and stage 2 teaching qualification can apply for direct entry onto year 2 of the programme (Year 2 currently takes place on Tuesday evenings)
- A recognised qualification and experience in the subject you intend to teach which should be at least one academic level above the level you intend to teach.
- Normally you will have a Level 2 qualification in English and Maths e.g. GCSE A-C grades, or have passed a Level 2 national test. If not you must be willing to gain this qualification.
- A minimum of 2.5 hours teaching a week for the duration of the course. You have to be delivering a course of study to groups of post-16 students
- Understanding of working with people in a professional manner and the ability to get on well with others.
- The support of your line manager in your teaching post (see application form)
- To achieve the full award it is best if your job role encompasses a full range of tasks and responsibilities within the FE/adult sector.
- Successful interview and task completion.
