Another VIPolitician comes into THC, this time as part of National Colleges Week and College Environment Week
Wednesday 11 December saw a VIP arrive at College as part of National Colleges Week. Lord Young of Norwood Green is the government’s Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Skills and Apprenticeships in the department for Business, Innovation and Skills.
Lord Young was given a guided tour of the College by a delegation headed by College Principal Michael Farley and he was keen to talk to as many students as possible to find out about their courses and ambitions. He dropped in to an A2 Media Studies class, visited the Health and Beauty department and observed students cooking in a training kitchen as part of their Skills for Work course.
As part of College Environment Week, which took place from 9-15 November, Lord Young was the first to lend his support to the College’s seven environmental pledges by signing his name in green on the airTHC plane prior to giving the opening remarks at this year’s first meeting of the Student Council.
Lord Young was impressed by his first visit to the College, having himself attended an FE College when a student. “Colleges were pretty grim when I was in education and there has been an enormous change since then. Tower Hamlets College seems to provide an interesting range of courses which really get their students prepared for the world of work. I was really impressed that the College has an active student council and it is so important that they use their voice to shape their curriculum and promote dialogue between students and staff.”
