Football Team Match Report THC 4 - 3 Southwark College (7/10/09)
Goal scorers: Allen-Cowans, Jama, Furtado, Augustus
Man of the Match: Nana, Augustus
The first game of the season saw the newly formed THC Football Team travel the short journey to Southwark Park. After a challenging journey, dealing with trying to squeeze an ancient minibus through the Rotherhithe Tunnel and following bogus directions given to us by the opposition manager (a blatant sabotage attempt), we arrived with no warm up time.
We started brightly with some neat passing and approach play and it didn’t take long for Allen-Cowans to open the scoring with a ‘stinging’ shot from 19 yards. We were 1-0 up and flying, before 1-1, then 2-1, 2-2 and 3-2.
Additional goals from Jama and Furtado gave us a marginal lead going into the second half in this tightly fought contest. Southwark started to pile on the pressure, but we countered with Augustus finishing clinically to make it 4-2. We looked comfortable, but a lapse of concentration from our solid defensive duo allowed Southwark to forge a late comeback attempt.
But we held on and came away with the 3 points. A very encouraging start for THC, a solid foundation to build on for future matches. There are a few issues to touch on in training but overall very impressive. Up the mighty THC!
