Tower Hamlets College Student Achievement Awards 2010 were the culmination of an exciting yet challenging year for students and staff at Tower Hamlets College. Many of our students have not only achieved amazing results through their study and hard work, some have overcome significant hurdles in order to get there.

There are some fabulous photographson flickr at  http://www.flickr.com/photos/towerhamletscollege/ .

The event took place in luxurious surroundings at the Hilton Hotel, South Quay. It was opened by our Principal Michael Farley who described our College’s pride in fulfilling our purpose of removing the barriers that stand in the way of personal and economic growth and achievement.

Our guest speaker was Dervis Konuralp, four times Paralympic swimmer and winner of 14 gold medals and a total of 35 major international medals. Dervis gave an inspiring speech telling the story of his rise to success despite the challenges created by his visual impairment and encouraging others not to be beaten by the obstacles life throws up.

Dervis is of course a huge star, but the true stars of the evening were our 33 award winning Students. The evening celebrated their achievements in recognition of the incredible journey many of our students have made and the very special talent that is here within our vibrant and diverse community.

There were two memorial awards, dedicated to Samir Algar and Salum Kombo. The Samir Algar Award for Outstanding Achievement in Teacher Training was dedicated to Samir, a former teacher training student, who sadly passed away 8 years ago. His father gave a very moving speech which emphasised the community spirit that the College embodies. The Salum Kombo Memorial Award celebrated the life of Salum, who tragically died last year. As Michael Farley noted, Salum was one of the “most gifted and likeable students.”

We would like to give a huge thank you to the sponsors of the event, without whom the Awards Ceremony would not have been such an enormous success.

Sponsors for the Awards were:
