Sports student Kayleigh Downey benefits from mentoring programme
At Tower Hamlets College mentoring is not just for those wanting to get into finance, business or the law. BTEC National Diploma in Sports student Kayleigh Downey has also benefited massively from the scheme.
Kayleigh meets regularly with Andy Lewis, who works for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, and is currently on secondment to the National School of Government. They discuss all range of topics from how to plan coursework to what going to university might be like.
Andy believes that mentoring is beneficial to all students as it allows the student to discuss their options beyond college. “Mentoring should be for everyone and not just for those looking to get into big businesses and blue-chip corporations,” he says. “It is great that Tower Hamlets College mentoring scheme is available to all students, whatever the course, and I hope more and more encouragement is given to all students, whether studying childcare or motor vehicle repair, business or catering to get involved. Obviously mentors from all ranges of backgrounds need to get involved too,” he adds.
Andy’s views are welcomed by Tower Hamlets College which provides a strong network of support services to all of its students, of which the mentoring scheme is one.
“The more services we can provide our students the more fruitful their time at College will be,” commented Mentoring Coordinator, Mable Kong-Rawlinson. “It is fantastic that we are able to provide our mentoring scheme to all our students, not just those who want to get into Canary Wharf or the City. Now we just need more mentors to volunteer to provide this brilliant service.”
