THC leads the way with sports leadership pilot scheme
Innovative Community Sports Leadership Award (CSLA) to run alongside BTEC Sports Science for lucky 16 students
The college has signed up to participate in the Community Sports Leadership Award (CSLA) pilot scheme which will mean the BTEC Sports Science students involved will receive an extra qualification. The Level 2 practical course will run alongside the BTEC and aims to teach and improve a wide variety of leadership skills for those who wish to lead safe and purposeful sporting activities within their communities.
The course has been organised by the college’s Further Education Sports Coordinator Daniel Searle who felt it would complement the existing Sports Science components. He said “I think it is a great idea. It is the most recognised entry level sports qualification and means they will be qualified and insured to coach young people in a wide variety of sports. Just as importantly, it is an almost essential qualification for your CV if you want to work in the sports industry, which is getting more competitive by the year.”
The course will involve elements of guided learning and volunteering and will be assessed throughout using a number of different methods. THC student Ashley Pepperell completed the course externally last year and said “I found it really useful. It helps you out in terms of improving your coaching skills but also in general life, as you learn to be more confident and assertive with your ideas. I have a teaching group at a local primary school and refer back to it all the time.”
Although the course is a pilot scheme this year and, as such, is only available for a limited number of students, it is anticipated that it will be more widely available from next year.
