Tower Hamlets College celebrates a fantastic university success rate for 2011
Tower Hamlets College is celebrating record results!
The success percentage of our 16 – 19 year old students who applied to university and were offered a place is a record 84%. This is a big improvement for the College, which last year achieved 77%, 7% above the national average for 2010.
343 students who have recently completed their fulltime 16 – 19 courses at Tower Hamlets College have gained places at top universities both in London and further afield.
Principal, Michael Farley, is impressed with the achievement of students. He states: “The success rate of our students gaining places at university demonstrates that we are committed to removing barriers and raising achievement for everyone. The breadth and the quality of universities that our students have progressed to is the result of hard work of the students, as well as staff, who have supported them every step of the way.”
Students have progressed to study their degrees at places such as the Guardian top-ten ranked universities UCL (ranked 5th), Lancaster University (ranked 7th), and Imperial (ranked 10th).
The College also has students progressing to The School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), City University, Kings College London, Reading University, Royal Holloway University of London, Queen Mary and the University of Essex. Each of these prestigious universities ranks highly in the Guardian University League table and as such we are incredibly pleased that our students will be able to progress and continue to achieve in their chosen subject areas in such fantastic learning environments.
The breadth of degree courses that will be undertaken by former Tower Hamlets College students is vast. She comments that: “The environment at SOAS is very diverse and multi-cultural, and I really feel like I belong. I chose the university because it has a very good reputation. I’ve just started my course and so far I’m finding it really interesting. It’s going to challenge me but I’m ready to work hard and the staff here are very helpful. I genuinely could not have achieved what I have without the help of staff at Tower Hamlets College, and for that I’m very grateful.”
Haiqin Zhuang, 20, from Poplar, achieved an A* in A Level Maths, A grades in A Level Further Maths and A/S Accounting, and a B grade in A Level Physics, and was a keen member of the girls’ College rugby team that participated in the 2010 Festival of Sport. Originally from China, Haiqin has only lived in England for the last four years so has managed to achieve fantastic results despite learning English as a second language.
She has progressed onto Lancaster University to study Mathematics, and is enjoying campus life, stating that: “I’ve just had Freshers’ Week, and I’ve really enjoyed all the events so far. The people at Lancaster University are extremely friendly so that has really helped me to settle in. I came to this university because it is international and has a very good reputation, particularly for mathematics.”
