Get Set for the 2012 Olympics!
Why we joined the Get Set Network
Since 2005 when London was announced as the successful bid to host the 2012 Games Tower Hamlets College has endeavoured to capitalise on the opportunities created for staff, students and the local community.
Tower Hamlets College blogg on the Get Set London 2012 site...
Being located in a host borough, 2012 is embedded in everything we do. We are committed to delivering numerous events and students will be able to see the connection between what we are delivering and the 2012 Games.
Tower Hamlets College staff and students are encouraged to make the most of the opportunities created outside the college environment. This includes registering their interest in volunteering at the Games and getting involved in the Bridging The Gap programme, to create employment opportunities for our students at the Games. We are also very pleased to have students apply to the school leavers programme, enabling a select few to work for Locog. We are very pleased to say that ex-student Mothiur Rahman is currently one of the 2010/11 cohort.
What we and our students are doing to commit to the Olympic and Paralympic Values
- Combine with host boroughs to run an Inter College Sports Festival which focuses on instilling the Olympic and Paralympic Values through sport and volunteering
- The College has applied for and achieved the inspire Mark accreditation for the Inter College Sports Festival
- We have had 2 groups of students involved in the legacy champions programme
- Tower Hamlets College partnered with Newvic Community College to present to other educational institutions about the Legacy Champions project at a Podium event. The aim was to inspire them to get involved in 2012
- The College held a five hundred photo and pledge event in order to mark 500 days land
- The College has a number of students involved in volunteering and leadership through Student Ambassador and Legacy Champions programmes
Our plans for the future:
- Continue to work with the host boroughs to run and build on the Inter College Sports Festival in the next two years and beyond
- Continue to look for opportunities to link with other Colleges in the host boroughs on projects which support the Olympic and Paralympic values, for example the Flames: Lighting the Way project
- Continue to submit appropriate activities and/or events to be accredited with the Inspire and get set Mark
- Continue to build on and support student volunteer and leadership programs
- Continue to blog on Get Set about the great things the College is involved with, in the lead up to the Games
- Continue to seek and embrace opportunities inspired by the Olympic and Paralympic Games and the 2012 values
- Continue to support students wishing to get involved in sports link them with local sporting clubs to gain coaching experience
- Develop stronger cross curricular links in the College, for example sport, music and media, to take full advantage of the opportunities created by 2012
- Make use of Get Set resources for 16 – 19 year olds at planned events and activities
Tower Hamlets College is committed to the Olympic values which under-pin our commitment to our students the local and wider community.
