Support for your Learning

While most of the time college life is rewarding and fun there may be times when you feel you need a bit of extra support. At Tower Hamlets College you need never feel alone. There is always someone to talk things through with.

Student Support

Our Student Support team based on the ground Floor at Poplar and Arbour Square (LG11b) consist of trained Advisers who are there to help you decide on your course choices, progression routes, careers and employment  as well as being able to advise on more practical matters such as welfare, immigration and financial matters.   See our dedicated Student Support page for further information »

Student Advisers

Our Student Advisers can also offer support on issues such as finance, benefits, health, stress, housing, childcare and relationships.

Student Advisers

The Student Advisers are based with our Student Support Team at Poplar.  Appointments can be made at the student reception at the following times:

POPLAR:

  • Monday - Friday: 9.30am - 12pm and 2pm - 4pm
  • Drop-in sessions run from: 12pm-1pm

ARBOUR SQUARE:
Room LG11B

  • Monday – Friday 9.30 – 12pm and 2 pm – 4 pm
  • Drop –in sessions run from 12 pm – 1 pm

Students with emergency issues can drop in at any time to see an Adviser. (On Fridays students need to contact reception first as administration is carried out on Fridays.)

Your personal tutor

Your personal tutor will be your main point of contact to discuss issues that may affect your work. He or she will offer:

  • Weekly meetings and regular one-to-one personal tutorials to discuss your progress
  • Advice on matters such as study skills, time management and careers
  • A first point of contact for parents and carers of students aged 16 to 18

Additional Learning Support (ALS)

The ALS Team is here to help you succeed. Support is available in a variety of forms including;

  • in-class support
  • small group sessions
  • 1:1 support
  • drop-in support in the Learning Zone
  • special exam arrangements
We can offer a wide range of specialist staff and equipment/software. For example;

  • assessment and support for dyslexia
  • enabling technology eg Read/Write Gold, Dragon
  • note takers, communicators, interpreters
  • support for blind/partially sighted students
  • support for deaf/hard of hearing students
The ALS Team negotiates support packages with students and their tutors and liaises with other agencies as appropriate.

Learning Services

  • Our Learning Resource Centre has a wide range of text books, journals, newspapers and audio-visual resources
  • Networked computer workstations have full internet and email access
  • Specialist IT and resource centres support learning for science, mathematics and languages

Counselling Service

  • Our professional Counsellor offers emotional support and psychological therapy by appointment

Regular subject consultation events

  • The opportunity to discuss your work regularly with subject tutors
  • Advice on developing action plans and setting targets for yourself
  • Consultation evenings for parents and carers
  • After-college workshops for most subjects, where you can get extra help and space to complete your assignments

The Learning Zone

In the Learning Zone there are Learning Mentors and Tutors to help you improve your:

  • reading and writing
  • maths
  • IT
  • study skills

We can also help you:

  • improve your grades by helping you to understand and work towards completion of your assignments
  • boost your learning with specialist software 
The Learning Zone is on the ground floor in the Annexe building at the Poplar site and is open 5 days a week.
