While most of the time college life is rewarding and fun there may be times when you feel you need a bit of extra support. At Tower Hamlets 6th Form College you need never feel alone. There is always someone to talk things through with.

Advice

Our Advice Team, based on the ground floor at Poplar, consist of trained Advisers who are there to help you decided on your course choice and progression routes, as well as being able to advise on more practical matters such as welfare and financial support available, immigration matters and careers and employment.  See our dedicated Advice page for further information »

Student Advisers

Our Student Advisers can also offer support on issues such as finance, benefits, health, stress, housing, childcare and relationships.

The Student Advisers are based with our Advice Team at Poplar. Appointments can be made at the Advice reception at the following times:

  • Monday - Thursday: 9.30am - 12pm or 2pm - 4pm
  • Drop in sessions run from: 12pm-1pm

Students with emergency issues can drop in at any time to see an Adviser. (On Fridays Students need to contact reception first as adminisatration is carried out on Fridays.)

Your personal tutor

Your personal tutor will be your main point of contact to discuss issues that may affect your work. He or she will offer:

  • Weekly meetings and regular one-to-one personal tutorials to discuss your progress
  • Advice on matters such as study skills, time management and careers
  • A first point of contact for parents and carers of students aged 16 to 18

 

Additional Learning Support (ALS)

If you feel you need support you can speak to your tutor, an ALS tutor or a Learning Mentor. You can find out more in the Key Skills Area (Ground Floor Annexe) and the ALS office (Lower Ground Floor Annexe).

We can help with:

  • English or Maths
  • Getting to or moving around the college
  • Specialist equipment or computer software
  • Exam access arrangements

The ALS Team provide support based on individual needs. We arrange in-class, one-to-one and small group support.

There is full wheelchair access at the Poplar, Arbour and East India Dock Road Centres.

  • Our Learning Resource Centre has a wide range of text books, journals, newspapers and audio-visual resources
  • Networked computer workstations have full internet and email access
  • Specialist IT and resource centres support learning for science, mathematics and languages

Confidential Advice Service

  • Counselling services with professional counsellors by arrangement

Regular subject consultation events

  • The opportunity to discuss your work regularly with subject tutors
  • Advice on developing action plans and setting targets for yourself
  • Consultation evenings for parents and carers
  • After-college workshops for most subjects, where you can get extra help and space to complete your assignments

Key Skills

We will help you improve the skills you need for study, work and life, such as literacy, numeracy, communication and information technology.

You can drop in to the Key Skills Area any time between 9am and 5pm (Fridays 9am – 2pm). You do not need an appointment.

Careers advice and Connexions

While you are at college we strongly advise that you think about your next step, whether you want to move on to another course here, or progress to university or a career.

We can provide:

  • The services of our own careers team and well resourced careers centre
  • Extensive links with local employers, including Canary Wharf and City of London firms
  • Help with work experience placements
  • Support for progression to Further and Higher Education, employment and training
  • Access to a Connexions advisor
