Motor Vehicle Mechanics

Want to be a car mechanic, an MOT tester, valeter, bodywork repairer, in vehicle restoration, showroom sales, parts departments or management? There are just so many routes to choose from, so come and gain a nationally recognised qualification to help you on the road to success for a career in the automotive industry. In our well-equipped Motor Vehicle workshops, you learn the practical skills of how to maintain and repair cars, as well as, the knowledge (theory) of how they work. Achieving a complete grounding in this subject, you will obtain qualifications which are recognised throughout the motor vehicle trade and industry. Along with Motor Vehicles, you will be working towards Functional Skills English, Maths and IT qualifications, to strengthen your expertise and employability. AS/A Level Government & Politics
This course will give you a grounding in both national and international politics as well as recent world affairs. At AS level you will examine the uncodified constitution of the UK and the different layers of government within it (the Prime Minister, Parliament and the judiciary). You will also learn how people become involved in the political system through elections, political parties and pressure groups.
At A2 level you will study international politics beginning with examining the changes in the world order, the global economy and the international institutions that operate within it (including the UN, NATO, the EU and the IMF). You will also study the latest developments in international politics including recent conflicts, regional instability and Britain’s changing role within the world.
BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business
The BTEC Extended Diploma in Business is designed to equip individuals with the skills, knowledge and understanding required for a range of roles in organisations within the business sector including administration, finance/accounts, marketing, management, human resources and law. The qualifications also provides solid academic skills should you wish to progress to Higher Education. Students are able to progress to BTEC Higher Nationals or undergraduate degree qualifications and professional occupations in the business world.
This qualification is not an exam based course. Students will focus on real-life case studies. You will be assessed through
role plays, presentations, work experience, written coursework and open book exams.

Hairdressing VRQ2 City & Guilds
You will learn all of the basic hairdressing skills such as cutting, colouring, perming etc. You will cover these subjects in a practical way in our real working salons. There is also an element of theory involved which underpins the qualification.
You will study:
- Health and safety practice in the salon
- Promoting products and services to clients
- Shampooing and conditioning the hair and scalp Client consultation Cutting women's hair
- Colouring and lightening hair
- The art of dressing hair.
- Perming and neutralising hair
PACE Peer Youth Work Training
Level 1/2 PACE training (Participate, Activate, Communicate, Empowerment and Equality) is the first step for a young person who wishes to become an active volunteer, junior leader or youth worker. You must be 16 years or over and involved in a local youth project in Tower Hamlets, or be interested in volunteering in youth work.
Hairdressing VRQ3 City & Guilds
In this course students study a variety of units including:
- Health and Safety
- Consultation techniques
- Cutting women's hair, creating a variety of looks
- Styling and dressing hair
- Cutting men's hair to create a variety of looks
- Colouring hair to create a variety of looks
- Bridal hair
- Colour correction
Learners will need to buy a uniform and kit, and a work placement is essential.
introduction to Health and Social Care
If you think you want a career in health care, social care or care management this is a fantastic introduction to working in this area. You will be studying a range of subjects in this area and assessment is through ongoing assignments/course work
Cycle Mechanics and Engineering Entry Level and Level 1
On the only full time course in Cycle Mechanics and Engineering in London, you will cover topics including: Health and Safety, Workshop Practice and Safety Standards, the removal and replacement of a variety of components including saddles, seat posts, handle bars, brake blocks, wheels, tyres and inner tubes and gear systems, punctures and cleaning.
Progression is to Level 2 and future employment opportunities include any industry which has basic mechanical tasks including the Cycle Industry, Maintenance, Sales and Retail or even Motor Bikes, Motor Vehicle, Engineering, Public Transport and Manufacturing.
Due care and consideration will be taken for applications from students with sight or hearing impairments, epilepsy or other issues which may cause concern within the industry under Health and Safety Regulations. Alternative course/career guidance will be offered.
Preparing for Successful Study
This course will support you in your return to study and prepare you for future courses such as Progression awards and Access programmes.
On this course you will cover:
• Writing skills for assignments
• Researching and developing ideas & concepts
• Action planning personal time in order to complete work
• Analysing the work of others
• Constructing reports and essays
• Exploring your preferred learning styles
• Using the library and the Learning Zone
You will also be supported in improving your English and Maths skills.
Entry requirements:
While there are no formal entry requirements for this course, suitable applicants would likely have some previous GCSE or O Level qualifications, though not necessarily at high grades. At interview we will discuss prior attainment and your plans for progression, and assess your suitability for this level of course.
Progression:
This course will prepare you for further studies in a wide range of areas. Most specifically it will equip you to study a full Level 2 Progression course, or preparing you for an Access to HE course. Through this route of progression you can open the door for entry to studying a Higher Education course at university.
Successful completion of this programme will enhance your chances progression onto a course at this college.
BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care
Who is This Course For?
Care staff working directly with service users in a care setting.
About the course
The course consists of 4 mandatory units and 2 optional units.
Mandatory units include:
•Communicate with and complete records for individuals
•Support the health and safety of yourself and individuals
•Develop your own knowledge and practice
•Ensure your own actions support the care, protection and well-being of individuals.
You will choose 2 optional units from a range which may include:
•Carry out and provide feedback on specific plan of care activities
•Support individuals to access and use information
•Help individuals to eat and drink
•Support individuals with their personal care needs
•Contribute to moving and handling individuals.
All students must undertake work experience in a care/childcare setting as part of this course. Work placement settings require students to obtain an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure to demonstrate that they are suitable to work with vulnerable people and/or children. Students must be aware that if information about previous criminal convictions, cautions or warnings is contained on their disclosure certificate they may not be accepted on to a placement.
How will I be assessed?
You will work with an assessor who will observe your practice within your work setting. You will provide a range of different evidence to show that you have knowledge and practical competence. Your assessor will judge the evidence against national standards.
Where next?
You can apply for related vocational or academic courses, or you may go on to the Level 3 in Health and Social Care if relevant to your job role.
PGCE Literacy or ESOL (Post Graduate Certificate in Education)
We aim to provide you with:
- a teaching qualification that fulfils Government requirements for Skills for Life teachers in the Life-long Learning sector
- the foundation for developing your competence as a Literacy or ESOL classroom practitioner
- knowledge of current government policy and other initiatives in post-compulsory education and training
- the knowledge and ability to reflect constructively on your professional practice
- a number of credits that can be taken forward for further study at MA level.
Entry Requirements:
- Success at interview and initial assessment
- The provision of an acceptable Enhanced Disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau
- Ability to study at university level
- A high level of spoken and written English
( And for Year 2 Only):
- A minimum of 3 hours of Literacy or ESOL teaching per week
- A recognised qualification and relevant experience of teaching ESOL or Literacy
ESOL - Communicate with Confidence

Creative Arts - starts January 2012
Open the door to the diverse world of creative computing and media production and explore the exciting potential for design and creativity.
On this course you will learn and develop new skills in both traditional and digital techniques; written and oral communication skills, and professional studio practice.
You will complete a range of projects based around professional briefs.
For example:
• TV ident for the BBC
• Swatch Watch design
• Phaindon Book cover design
Art & Design: Learn about drawing, painting and 3D design, computer design, fashion and textiles. You will have the opportunity to visit galleries and museums and produce your own personal art & design project.
Multimedia: Develop computer graphics-based creative skills and work with state-of-the-art Apple Mac computers. Our professional digital software includes Photoshop and Illustrator. Explore the exciting world of digital photography and motion graphics creating your very own animation following professional studio practice.
Media: Develop your film production skills by working as part of a team to plan and produce a video to be screened at the Creative Arts End of Year show. Our media studios have cutting-edge digital software used for film editing, adding sound and special effects.
If you successfully complete this course, you will be entitled an achievement bonus of up to £100, as well as a clear progression route on to the next level course in September.
