We have books and materials so you can work off-line if you prefer. Learndirect has been designed to fit around your lifestyle and our helpful tutors are always on hand to make sure you reach your goals.

Learndirectat THC offers courses in Maths, English and IT. We can help you work towards qualifications such as ITQ and the National Tests in Numeracy and Literacy (which requires the equivalent skill set as a GCSE in Maths and/or English).

There are taster courses available for those of you who aren't familiar with computers and friendly staff to help you navigate your way.

You don't need any experience or prior qualifications; there will always be someone available throughout your learning to offer support.

THC Students Tower Hamlets College provides a range of both full time and part time courses for adults with learning difficulties and disabilities. These courses offer a range of full and part time options where learners have opportunities to improve or maintain their literacy, communication, numeracy, ICT, independent living skills and work skills in a variety of contexts.

We also offer a range of courses designed to help students enter working life including Introduction to Skills for Work and Transitions to Work, which provides work experience.

Some of our courses offer the opportunity to run your own enterprise, for example our successful cafe project and our floristry business. 

Students can receive tasters in art, music, shopping, cooking and much much more!

Courses for older students are based at Arbour Square and courses for younger students are based at Poplar.

Vocational Options Students

Vocational courses are designed so that you can learn relevant skills and gain specialist qualifications for a variety of jobs in particular sectors.

These courses are available from several awarding bodies, such as BTEC, City and Guilds, Edexcel and OCR, and can be taken at many different levels in a wide range of subjects.

Many of these courses have been designed in collaboration with the relevant industry so that they can equip you with the skills and knowledge that employers demand.

Youthwork Courses

The Curriculum and Youth Work Training Forum (CYWTF) is the lead forum for co-ordinating, developing and delivering youth work training/Curriculum development and courses for people aged 16 years and above, who are working with young people aged 13 to 19 years in Tower Hamlets Youth and Connexions Service (part of the integrated youth support service).

Tower Hamlets College, LBTH Youth and Connexions Service, Poplar Harca, Old Ford Housing, George Green School, Bishop Challenor School, Swanlea School Consortium and other voluntary sector organisations represent the forum in developing, planning, organising and decision-making as a management body.

The role of the forum is to:

  1. Develop a training and curriculum strategy for everyone involved in working with young people in the borough.
  2. To devise and deliver new types of youth work training and curriculum development.
  3. To create a pool of trainers/assessors from the community who will deliver a range of training borough-wide.
  4. To enable workers to develop knowledge, skills and the ability to develop their work practice, personal and professional careers.
  5. To ensure a wide variety of accessible training and curriculum is on offer based on meeting the government requirements and quality assurance needs for youth work.

Courses are taught by professionals who have worked in the financial services sector. Our results are excellent with our CISI Award students gaining the top marks nationally for the past four years. Specialist job search support is available to all students. Internships are also available through bespoke programmes, as are mentors.

Sage Computerised Accounting (one week College Certificate)

The aim of this programme is to assess competence and understanding in carrying out a wide range of day-to-day bookkeeping routines and activities using the Sage Line 50 computerised accounting package, including data maintenance, entry of business transactions and non-routine bookkeeping tasks.
The main topics that will be covered are:

o Basic computer operations e.g. restore and backup data.
o Set up the system for a sole trader e.g. company details, VAT codes, financial year, program date and chart of accounts.
o Produce routine accounting reports - Account History, Aged Debtor, Aged Creditor, Trial Balance & Nominal Account Activity.
o Sales, Purchase & Nominal Ledgers transactions i.e. double entry bookkeeping.
o Process cash/bank receipts and payments, recurring entries and journal transactions.
o Bank reconciliation (not requiring adjustments).

At the end of the course you will be sit an assessment to gauge your achievement of the required learning outcomes.

The course costs £215, plus registration and includes the latest version of Sage Instant Accounts.

Where this course might take me: 
A level 3 Sage programme or AAT programme (subject to entry criteria being met). This course should also improve your employment prospects.

The Aspirations Programme offers courses for adults with learning difficulties and disabilities.  These courses help you improve your reading, writing, communication and number skills.  We have courses to help you improve your independent living skills, for example shopping and cooking.  We also have courses to help you develop your creative skills by designing and making things.

Subjects:
We offer classes in history, IT, cooking, art, gardening, music maths,enterprise, shopping, literacy, textiles, childcare, healthy living and sports.

Certificates:
You will decide what you want to learn.  You will decide what you want to improve on.  You will get certificates that show you what you have achieved on your course. There is an opportunity to gain an Award in Personal Progress.

Support:
 You will be working in a small group with a teacher and an education support worker.  Cooking classes have 6 students with a teacher and an education support worker.  You can have support in class and during the breaks and lunch times.
