THC Courses
AS/A Level English Literature
At AS Level you will study a play, a novel and a collection of poetry. You will also study some shorter texts and extracts. All the literature you study will be modern and will explore the issue of identity in areas such as gender, race, class and culture.
You will be expected to read your texts at home and to read widely. There will be two pieces of coursework based on your novel and play and one of the pieces could be a creative response. There will be one examination on your poetry text and on your wider reading of the Struggle for Identity in Modern Literature.
All students who pass in the AS year will be encouraged to continue with English Literature in the second year where one of your texts will be a Shakespeare play.
Each year we have several students who go on to study English at top universities such as Queen Mary.
AS/A Level Religious Studies
Religious Studies gives you the chance to look at how we have come to understand ourselves and the world around us.
At AS level you are required to study two units. The first looks at Ethics. This allows you to explore issues such as Euthanasia, Abortion, philosophers such as Bentham and Mill and the Value and Nature of Human Life. The second unit will concentrate on a world religion. You will be studying Christianity and will focus on Trinity and Salvation, Christian scripture and Christian way of life.
At A2 level you will look at Life, Death and Beyond. This will consist of studying life on earth, its relationship to a variety of religions alongside different rituals of death and what happens in the afterlife. You will also study Islam, Sharia Law, Role of Women and the Family and Islam in Contemporary Society.
You will develop good written, interpersonal and communication skills. You will develop critical and evaluative skills, take part in group presentations and carry out research. You will be assessed by sitting two exams in the first year and two in the second year.
AS/A Level English Language & Literature
This course combines the study of language and literature. You will consider how language works; how it has changed over time; how it is spoken by people, both in real contexts and in books, films and plays; and how writers use different styles according to different genres and purposes. You will look at many forms of writing: novels, poetry, newspaper and magazine articles, transcripts, short stories, plays and television dramas, and consider why language is used in a certain way and assess its effects.
You will learn to adapt your own writing style for different genres, audiences and purposes, for example a radio play, travel writing, teenage magazine articles or even an episode of your favourite TV series. As well as learning aspects of grammar and developing an understanding of appropriate terminology, you will focus on how language and social attitudes have changed over time.
