About the Course

The Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Computing (RQF) is delivered by lecturers who are industry experts with extensive experience and a proven track record of delivering computing courses.

This course provides a specialist programme of study that covers the key knowledge, understanding and practical skills required in the computing sector and also offers particular specialist emphasis through the choice of specialist units. The Pearson BTEC Level 4 HNC is a nationally recognised qualification offering career progression and professional development for those already in employment and opportunities to progress into higher education.

You will be studying a range of three mandatory core units• and 5 specialist units. All units are 15 credits at Level 4.

The Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Computing is a qualification with a minimum of 120 credits of which 45 credits are mandatory core. All units are assessed against criteria as Pass, Merit or Distinction.

You will learn how to approach your studies in terms of the different techniques needed to be a successful learner in higher education, including developing research and presentation skills. Your Personal Tutor will meet with you on a regular basis to discuss your progress and guide you through the process of applying to university through UCAS if you decide to further your studies at degree level.

Throughout the programme, you will have the opportunity to attend industry events, visit leading businesses and meet with industry practitioners .ictive in their fields. In addition, you will benefit from 1: 1 personal career coaching from National Careers Service advisers.

  • • An Access to Higher Education Certificate or another Level 3 qualification or equivalent in Computing or a related subject area e.g. BTEC Extended Diploma, Advanced Diploma, AVCE etc. These must be achieved with a minimum grade of merit or;
  • • Grade C or above - A Level in addition to grades A*-C in GCSE English and Maths
  • • Appropriate work experience and other achievements in Computing & ICT field will be considered
  • • Non-native English speakers or who have not studied the final two years of school in English, should demonstrate capability in English at a standard commensurate with IELTS 5.5.
  • • The qualification leads to a wide variety of careers in the computing industry including programming and network support.
  • • Progress to the Pearson BTEC Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Computing.
  • • Progress to a degree or an honours degree by entering into the second year of a related university programme depending on each university's entry conditions. This programme has identified possible progression routes (non UCAS) with the University of West London, and the University of East London for a variety of computing degrees.

You will be taught by our highly skilled team of staff who will pass on their many years of industry knowledge an experience to you. 

The course is 100% continually assessed by coursework. Each unit carries a number of both written and practical assignments. The programme consists of 14.5 hours of timetabled teaching, learning and assessment activities and an additional 30 hours per week in independent learning.

  • Independent research
