On Friday 17th May 2013, Martin Donnelly, Permanent Secretary at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) visited Tower Hamlets College. The BIS supervises the Skills Funding Agency, with Mr Donnelly being the most senior Civil Servant. Mr Donnelly was keen to see, firsthand how our college contributes to the wider agenda of economic growth, being a firm believer in the value of colleges in UK growth. The visit started with an introduction to the senior management team followed by a working lunch in the college’s training restaurant, Canary View, prepared by Level 1 Catering students (pictured).
After meeting the Catering students the visit then moved to the Technical Skills facility where Mr Donnelly took part in a ‘have-a-go’ activity in pipe fixing with Level 2 Building Services students.
After a meeting with the college’s National Careers Service team the tour then progressed to TowerSkills, the college’s dedicated apprenticeship service, located at nearby East India Dock Road.
Mr Donnelly, joined by Principal, Gerry McDonald and Director of Enterprise and Skills, Martin Reed met with employers with whom TowerSkills had successfully secured apprenticeships for young people.
