MP KICKS OFF FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT AT COLLEGE’S NEW 3G PITCHES
Jim Fitzpatrick, MP, Poplar and Limehouse, today [Friday 10th October 2014] opened Tower Hamlets College’s new 3G football pitches at its Poplar Campus site. The pitches will be available all year round to students and the local community in Poplar and Canary Wharf.
The 3G football pitches are the newest addition to the college’s sports and recreational facilities for students, which also includes an indoor basketball court and computer games room, which students use during term times.
To celebrate the opening of the new football pitches by Mr Fitzpatrick, students took part in a college football tournament involving 16 teams from across the College including three all girls teams, which was the first time female teams had participated. Each team took the name of a Premier League club with QPR coming out the tournament winners.
Speaking at the launch, Jim Fitzpatrick said:
‘As an avid footballer myself, I’d love to play on these fabulous new pitches and it is great to see the students enjoying the new facilities and having fun.’
College Principal Gerry McDonald said:
‘Sport has always been a great way to bring people together and our new 3G pitches will be enjoyed by our students and the local community.’
Student Abdirahman Hassan 18, from Rotherhithe, said:
‘Sport gives us something to do both during our breaks and after College. I am part of the Splash programme so I use the facilities a lot. The new pitches are great.’
