Ofsted inspectors award Tower Hamlets College Good college status
Students and staff at Tower Hamlets College are today celebrating being awarded ‘Good’ college status by Ofsted. The grading reflects the high quality of teaching and student support and the continued focus on improvement and progression into employment and university.
Inspectors also went on to rate the College’s business course provision as outstanding and praised the strong focus on developing students’ employment skills through a range of successful and innovative initiatives including partnerships with prestigious world class companies in Canary Wharf.
The inspectors praised the College for raising overall standards, having a strong focus on delivering courses linked to the needs of the local community and for overseeing a dramatic improvement in exam success rates, which have risen from 68% in 2010 to close to 87% in 2013.
Inspectors commented favourably on the College’s enthusiastic and skilled teachers for planning and teaching lessons imaginatively and noted students’ enjoyment in studying and their high levels of motivation to do well.
They also recognised the College’s thriving student ambassador and volunteer programmes for giving students extra employability and personal skills as well as the strong management and leadership of the College.
Gerry McDonald, Tower Hamlets College principal said:
“This is important recognition of the changes that have taken place at the College over the past four years. Tower Hamlets College is now among the best in London and, as Ofsted have found, has improved rapidly and significantly. We are committed to serving the education and employment needs of our local community and we welcome Ofsted’s recognition of the quality of our teaching and other innovative approaches to helping young people and adults in Tower Hamlets to progress successfully into work or further education.”
